Philosophy
Welcome! I am excited about the opportunity to share with you my views on psychological treatment. Thank you for your interest. Please contact me with any questions.

I subscribe to the scientist/practitioner model in clinical psychology. This means that the treatments I provide have an empirical (scientifically-supported) basis. My overall approach is eclectic, with an emphasis on cognitive-behavioral interventions. I believe psychotherapy is a collaborative endeavor, and I enjoy working with each individual to help him/her navigate through life's difficulties.

Hundreds of studies have demonstrated that psychotherapy is in fact helpful. In most cases, people are more likely to successfully change with the help of professional treatment than without such help. Medication, which I am NOT licensed to prescribe, may also be helpful to some individuals, in which case we would discuss referral options. Decisions about the directions to pursue is collaborative.

I am often asked to define cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). It is a highly effective, scientifically proven technique designed to help people learn to become more aware of their thought patterns. CBT is a systematic method of promoting awareness of one's internal dialogue, evaluating its validity, and restructuring thoughts so that they are more adaptive and accurate.

Much of our thinking is automatic, occurring outside of our awareness. Styles of thinking can become habits. We can influence our thoughts just as we can our muscles. With CBT, individuals learn how to link thoughts, emotions, and behaviors in order to understand how ways of thinking affect how they feel and behave in situations.

Much research indicates that CBT is the treatment of choice for mood and anxiety disorders, eating disorders, stress management, and many other problems for which men and women present for treatment.

Treatment Methods
Psychologists use a variety of treatment techniques, and it is important to ask a prospective therapist what kinds of methods he or she utilizes. My treatment approaches incorporate cognitive behavioral, psychodynamic, and interpersonal therapy methods. I specialize in short-term, solution-focused treatment. At times I will incorporate adjunct techniques, such as Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR), or recommend bibliotherapy (books), or marital, family, or group therapy for my patients. Treatment is always a team effort. I provide recommendations after conducting a comprehensive assessment, and the patient and I mutually agree upon a flexible course of action.
